In this capstone course, ANP 489, I chose to explore the topic of minority underrepresentation and participation in the U.S. healthcare system, and the systematic barriers these communities face. During the research process for this paper, it was clear that an individuals’ experience shapes the knowledge and construct our perception of the social world around us. It is essential for the healthcare system to acknowledge and address these disparities to ensure that everyone has equal access to quality care. Throughout this paper I used analysis of both qualitative and personal narrative to provide a more nuanced understanding of the experiences of marginalized communities within the healthcare system. I further engage in critical analysis by questioning the underlying assumptions and ideologies that perpetuate these inequalities. Specifically highlighting the oles of social constructs such as race, socioeconomic status, and language. This further allowed me to challenge the dominant narrative and shed light on the complex interplay between social structures and health outcomes.
